Most Gmail trouble comes down to one of two things: your storage is full, or your inbox is. These pages answer both kinds honestly — including the ones where our own app is not the fix. We make a Gmail cleaner; a full Google account is often full of photos, not email, and we would rather tell you that than sell you something that can't work.
First, diagnose
- How to clean up Gmail — Three passes, in order: stop the inflow, sweep the backlog with search, then empty Trash if storage is the reason.
- Is it your phone or your Google account that's full? — Phone storage and Google account storage are two different things, and the fix for one does nothing for the other.
- What is data hoarding? — Keeping files and mail you will never open again, because deleting feels riskier than keeping.
- How many emails can I send at once in Gmail? — Google's published limits for a personal account, what happens when you cross one, and why the same question about deleting in bulk has a completely….
- Are Gmail attachments secure? — What Google actually does to an attachment, what encryption in transit does and does not cover, and the honest limits — including the one most people….
- What is information overload? — A term older than email that describes a real limit: more input than you can turn into decisions.
- How many emails do you get a day? — Why a quoted average tells you little about your own inbox, what to check before trusting one, and the three searches that give you your own figure….
- Why is Gmail putting mail in Important? — Important is a marker Gmail sets from your own habits, not a folder mail moves into.
- Why do I have to delete emails multiple times? — Deleted Gmail that comes back, a count that barely moves, a storage figure that does not change — the six usual causes, and which one you have.
- How many emails can an iPhone hold? — Apple publishes no message limit for Mail on iPhone.
- How do I know how many emails I have in Gmail? — The counter above your Gmail list, why it may be counting conversations, and the searches that count one slice of your mail at a time.
- How many emails does the average person have? — No current, representative figure is published.
- How many email accounts can I have on iPhone? — Apple's Mail guides give no maximum; they say you can add accounts at any time.
- Does Gmail block certain emails? — Yes.
- Does Gmail scan for viruses? — Yes, every attachment sent and received.
- How many emails can I schedule in Gmail? — Google's limit is 100 scheduled emails at a time.
- Why are emails missing from my Gmail inbox? — Usually archived, filtered, in Spam or Trash, or deleted from another device.
- Why do my Gmail emails disappear after I read them? — Usually an inbox layout that files read mail lower down, or another mail app set to archive or delete Gmail's copy once it downloads it. How to tell which.
- Why is my Gmail Primary tab empty? — Gmail is filing your mail in other tabs, or archiving it before it reaches the inbox.
- What are high priority emails in Gmail? — In Gmail, high priority is Gmail's own guess about what matters to you, not a flag a sender sets.
- What is clutter in email? — Two meanings: Outlook's Clutter folder, which Microsoft calls replaced by Focused Inbox but never set a final end date for, and everyday inbox clutter.
- How do I cancel a sent email in Gmail? — Tap Undo in the few seconds after sending.
- How do I find archived emails in Gmail? — Archived Gmail sits under All mail, and the search in:archive lists only archived mail.
- What is All Mail in Gmail? — All Mail is the view of your whole Gmail mailbox, archived mail included.
- Why do deleted emails keep coming back in Gmail? — Usually the email was archived, not deleted, by a swipe, a mail program or a reply.
- Can I search the Trash in Gmail? — Yes, but an ordinary Gmail search skips Trash.
- Can I make All Mail the default view in Gmail? — Gmail opens on the inbox, and Google documents no setting to change that.
- What is the Promotions tab in Gmail? — Gmail's tab for deals and offers.
- How does Priority Inbox work in Gmail? — Priority Inbox splits Gmail into sections you choose, led by Important and unread.
- Why is Gmail only showing old emails? — Either new mail is not reaching this device, or your inbox layout puts older messages first.
- How do I mark an email address as important in Gmail? — A filter on the sender's address with the mark-as-important action makes Gmail flag every message from them.
- Why is Gmail archiving my emails automatically? — Gmail's help never says it archives mail on its own.
- What are starred emails in Gmail, and how do I find them? — A star is Gmail's bookmark for mail you want to come back to.
- Why does Gmail mark my emails as read automatically? — Gmail Help documents no timer that marks mail read.
- Why is Gmail search not finding my emails? — Gmail search skips Spam and Trash, can sort by relevance, shows related results when nothing matches, and offline sees only synced mail.
- How do I turn off conversation view in Gmail? — One setting per device: See all settings on a computer, per account on Android, Inbox customizations on iPhone.
Google account storage (the shared 15 GB)
- Google storage full — what actually works — Your Google account's storage (up to 15 GB) is shared by Gmail, Drive, and Photos.

- How many GB does Gmail give you? — A personal Google account gets up to 15 GB, shared by Gmail, Drive and Photos, not 15 GB for mail.
- Why aren't my attachments showing up in Gmail? — A received attachment may have come as a Drive link, been blocked by your network or the virus scanner, or failed in the browser.
- Can I recover emails after emptying the Trash in Gmail? — Usually not; Google calls a permanent delete final.
- How do I empty the Gmail Trash all at once? — Open Trash and use Empty Trash now: in a banner above the list on a computer, at the top in the Android and iPhone apps.
