Why is Gmail putting mail in Important?

Gmail is not moving your mail anywhere: "Important" is a marker it adds to messages it predicts you care about, and it predicts from what you have done before. A marked message stays in your inbox and in All Mail; the Important view simply lists everything carrying the marker. Google's name for the feature is "Importance markers" (Importance markers in Gmail, read 24 September 2026).

The signals Google names

Google says it "uses several signals to decide which messages to automatically mark as important, including":

"Whom you email, and how often you email them"
"Which emails you open"
"Which emails you reply to"
"Keywords that are in emails you usually read"
"Which emails you star, archive, or delete"

"Including" matters: the list is not presented as complete, and Google does not publish how the signals are weighed (Importance markers in Gmail, read 24 September 2026). What the list does tell you is that the marker is about your behaviour. Open every message from a shop for a month and Gmail has good reason to think the shop matters to you. To see the reason for one message, Google says to "hover over the importance marker".

Why it looks like a folder

Two things make a marker feel like a place. In Gmail, is:important lists every marked message, and label:important appears among the operator examples (Refine searches in Gmail, read 24 September 2026). And mail programs connected over IMAP show it as an actual folder: Google's developer documentation lists [Gmail]/Important among the special folders it presents, "added for Gmail's Priority Inbox" (IMAP Extensions, read 24 September 2026). The same page says Gmail gives each email a unique ID "so that you can identify a unique message across multiple folders". One message; several places it appears. Correcting it, one message at a time

"If an email was marked as important but you don't want it to be, click the importance marker to change it. This also helps Gmail learn which emails you think are important." Messages Gmail has not marked show the same marker empty, per the same page.

For a sender you want treated the same way every time, Google's inbox-categories page notes that a filter can be set up that "Marks their emails as important" (Organize your emails into categories, read 24 September 2026). Google's filters help page itself does not list importance among the actions it describes, so check the options in the filter dialog rather than relying on either page. How Gmail filters work.

Switching it off

Both switches are on the computer only — "You can't change this setting from the Gmail app, but the settings you choose on your computer will apply to your app too." In Settings, See all settings, the Inbox tab, under "Importance markers":

"Don't use my past actions to predict which messages are important" — keeps the markers but stops them learning from you.
"No markers" — hides them.

If what bothers you is an inbox split into an "Important" section on top, that is the inbox type, not the marker. "If you choose "Important first," your inbox will be separated into two sections: "Important" at the top, and "Everything else" at the bottom." Our view

When the marker lands on promotions, it is usually telling you something true about your habits: those are emails you open. That is worth a moment's thought before switching the feature off. The marker is reflecting the inbox you have, and the steadier fix is fewer of the messages it keeps misjudging, not a quieter marker.
