Gmail can't receive emails? Check your storage first

Last reviewed: September 23, 2026 · Markdown version

When a Google account runs out of storage, mail stops in both directions. Google's storage help lists what happens when the account reaches its limit: "You can't send or receive emails." and "Messages sent to you go back to the sender." (Manage your storage in Drive, Gmail & Photos, read 23 September 2026). People writing to you get bounce messages, and nothing waits for you — so this is worth fixing fast, and worth fixing right.

Step 1 — confirm storage is actually the cause

Open one.google.com/storage, signed in to the affected account. If the bar shows you at or over your limit, storage is your problem — and Google's storage manager can show "how much storage you use by service" (How your Google storage works, read 23 September 2026), which decides whether to clean Photos, Gmail or Drive. If storage looks fine, the cause is something else (filters, forwarding, or the app on one device not syncing) and nothing on this page will help — the syncing page covers that side.

Step 2 — the fastest safe space recovery, in order

  1. Empty Gmail's Trash and Spam. Google calls emptying them "the quickest way to recover space", because until you permanently clear them "they count against your storage limit" (same storage page). In Trash, use "Empty Trash now"; in Spam, "Delete all spam messages now" (Report spam in Gmail, read 23 September 2026). Emptying is permanent — glance through Trash first if you've recently deleted anything you might want back.
  2. Empty the other two Trashes. Google Drive and Google Photos each keep their own. Drive says files in its Trash "still count towards your storage until they are permanently deleted" (Delete files in Google Drive, read 23 September 2026); Photos keeps deleted items in its trash for 30 days (Delete photos & videos, read 23 September 2026). In the Photos app the Trash is under Collections.
  3. If Photos holds the space: convert to Storage saver. photos.google.com → Settings → Manage storage → under "Recover storage", Convert existing photos & videos to Storage saver. Photos larger than 16 MP are resized to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p, and Google allows it once a day (Choose the backup quality of your photos & videos, read 23 September 2026). That page does not say the conversion can be undone, so keep originals elsewhere if you need full resolution. More: the Photos page.
  4. If Gmail holds the space: delete heavy attachments. Google's own suggestion is the search has:attachment larger:10M; delete what it finds, then empty Trash again — deleted mail keeps counting until Trash clears. At whole-inbox scale, see what works for Gmail cleanup.

Two timing facts that prevent panic

Keeping it from happening again

If the space was photos or Drive files, the fixes above are the whole answer — revisit them when the bar creeps up. If the space was email, the backlog is usually years of newsletters, promotions and receipts, and the durable fix is clearing it and unsubscribing from what keeps refilling it. On a computer, Gmail's search plus its "select all conversations" link does it in one pass. The Gmail phone apps select up to 50 messages at a time, per Google's Android instructions (Delete messages in Gmail — Android, read 23 September 2026), which is slow across years of mail. Adinand Email Cleaner groups your mailbox by sender so you can clear thousands of emails and unsubscribe in a few taps, on your device, reading only email metadata. That's the specific case we can help with; everything else on this page is Google's own tooling, free.
