Why is Gmail only showing old emails?

One of two things is usually going on: new mail is not reaching your account or this device, or it has arrived and the inbox layout is putting older messages in front of it. A single search tells you which. On a computer, open Gmail in a browser and search newer_than:2d. Google documents the operator as "Search for emails older or newer than a time period. Use d (day), m (month), or y (year)", with newer_than:2d as its own example (Refine searches in Gmail, read 14 October 2026). Recent mail in the results means it arrived. No results, when you know people have written, means it did not.

New mail is on the web but not on your phone

That is the app, not the account. Google's sync troubleshooter lists "Your inbox doesn't update" among the common sync problems, and suggests checking on a computer first because it "helps confirm if the issue is specific to the app" (Fix sync errors with the Gmail app (Android), read 14 October 2026). The Android steps, from a manual refresh to the Sync Gmail checkbox, are on Gmail not syncing.

On an iPhone or iPad, Google's version of the page has two settings that one doesn't (Fix sync errors with the Gmail app (iPhone & iPad), read 14 October 2026):

New mail is missing everywhere

Then it is not arriving, or something moves it on arrival. Google's missing-mail page starts with storage: "If your storage is full, you may not be able to send or receive emails" (Gmail messages are missing, read 14 October 2026), and the sync page adds that at the limit "Messages sent to you return to the sender." An inbox frozen at the day you ran out of space looks exactly like one that only shows old mail. The same missing-mail page tells you to check Settings, Filters and Blocked Addresses for any filter containing "Delete it" or "Skip Inbox", and the forwarding settings for a copy being archived or deleted. Gmail not receiving emails covers the storage fix, and emails missing from the inbox the rest of that checklist.

The mail arrived, but older messages sit on top

This is the case people do not expect. Gmail's inbox type changes the order, and several types split the inbox into a top section and "Everything else". Google's layout page: "If you choose "Unread first," your inbox will be separated into two sections: "Unread" at the top and "Everything else" at the bottom", and "Important first" and "Starred first" work the same way (Change your Gmail inbox layout, read 14 October 2026). In our reading of that, an unread newsletter from last spring sits above this morning's mail you have already opened. Switch the inbox type back to Default under Settings on a computer if that is what you are seeing.

Two more layout effects, both on Google's pages:

What the layout and categories pages above do not offer is a plain sort order. Neither describes a setting to list the inbox oldest first or newest first when we read them on 14 October 2026, so if your inbox looks reversed, the inbox type is the documented thing to check.
