Why is my Gmail Primary tab empty?

Last reviewed: October 4, 2026 · Markdown version

An empty Primary tab almost always means your mail is arriving but being filed somewhere else: in Promotions, Social, Updates or Forums, or straight into the archive. Primary is the leftover tab. Google defines it as "Emails from people you know and messages that don’t appear in other tabs." (Organize your emails into categories, read 4 October 2026). So if every message you get is one Gmail recognises as a newsletter, a receipt or a notification, Primary can stay empty for days, and it does not mean anything is broken.

First, see where the mail went

Click through the other tabs. Each has a job in Google's list: Social is "Messages from social networks and media-sharing sites", Promotions is "Deals, offers, and other promotional emails", and Updates is "Automated confirmations, notifications, statements, and reminders that may not need immediate attention." To check one category without clicking, search with category: followed by its name, as in Google's example category:social party (all from the categories page above). If the tabs are full of mail you expected in Primary, it is a sorting question, and the next two sections fix it. If they are empty too, skip to the archive section.

A new Updates tab can take Primary's mail

Receipts, shipping notices and security alerts are exactly what Updates is for. On the Gmail app the categories page adds that Updates "may be enabled if the “Primary,” “Social,” and “Promotions” categories are on." (Organize your emails into categories (Android), read 4 October 2026). If that tab appeared without you choosing it, it may be why Primary feels quieter. To turn it off in the Android app: Menu, Settings, your account, Inbox categories, then uncheck "Updates". On iPhone and iPad the path runs through Inbox customizations, then Inbox categories, then Turn off Updates (Organize your emails into categories (iPhone & iPad), read 4 October 2026). The same switches work for Social; removing the Social tab has the details.

Teach Gmail what belongs in Primary

If nothing is in any tab, check the archive

Google is plain on this: "Archived emails don’t appear in categories." Archived mail lives under the All mail label (the categories page above). If new mail is going straight there, a filter with "Skip Inbox" or another mail app archiving Gmail's copy are the usual suspects; emails missing from your Gmail inbox walks through Google's checklist for both.

Why you may not have noticed

Notifications follow Primary. Google's words: "When you turn on notifications for new mail, you only get notifications about messages in the “Primary” category." (the categories page above). Mail filed into the other tabs therefore arrives silently, and an empty Primary can look like an inbox that has stopped working.

Turning the tabs off instead

Google's categories page puts it in one line: "To turn off categories, change your inbox type." With a type other than Default, Gmail stops splitting the inbox into tabs, so there is no Primary to be empty (Change your Gmail inbox layout, read 4 October 2026). The trade is one longer list to sort yourself. One limit pushes the other way: the tabbed Default type is not available "If you have more than 250,000 emails in your inbox" (the categories page above). The steps for each device are on how to change your Gmail inbox type.
