How do I make emails skip the inbox in Gmail?

Last reviewed: October 1, 2026 · Markdown version

Make a Gmail filter for the mail, and in its actions tick "Skip the Inbox (Archive it)". That checkbox is named in Google's own inbox tips, which pair it with a label so the mail is filed as well as moved: "Check the Skip the Inbox (Archive it) box to move response messages out of your inbox. Don’t worry, you can still view them later if needed." (Tips to optimize your Gmail inbox, read 1 October 2026). The mail still arrives; it simply never lands in front of you. How filters work in general is on how to set up filters in Gmail; this page is about this one action.

Setting it up

Do it on a computer. Google's filter instructions are written for Gmail on the web: open the search options, enter the sender or words that identify the mail, click Search to check the results are what you mean, then "At the bottom of the search window, click Create filter." (Create rules to filter your emails, read 1 October 2026). In the list of actions, tick Skip the Inbox (Archive it). Tick Apply the label too and pick one, unless you are happy to find this mail only by searching.

Where the mail goes

Skipping the inbox is archiving on arrival. Google describes archived mail this way: "it no longer appears in your inbox, but you can still find it under the “All mail” label." To list just the archived mail, search in:archive (Archive Gmail messages, read 1 October 2026).

Why a thread can come back

Two rules from Google's pages explain most of the times a filter seems to stop working. On archiving: "If someone replies to a message you archive, it returns to your inbox." (the Archive Gmail messages page above). On filters: "when someone replies to a message you've filtered, the reply will only be filtered if it meets the same search criteria." (the Create rules page above). So a filter built on a sender's address catches their replies, but a reply from someone else in the same thread does not match, and the thread pops back into your inbox. If that happens, widen the filter, or accept that the conversation is one you are part of.

Out of sight is not out of storage

Archived mail is kept, so it still counts: Google's storage page includes "Gmail messages and attachments" in what uses your quota (How your Google storage works, read 1 October 2026). Skip the inbox suits mail you need to keep but do not need to see: receipts, order updates, notifications. For mail you are simply done with, archiving is the wrong tool; archive or delete goes through that choice.

Where the app comes in

For that second kind of mail, Adinand Email Cleaner works from the other end. Its auto-trash rules are native Gmail filters as well, created through Gmail's own API from your phone, and they send a sender's mail to Gmail's Trash rather than to the archive. Because they are Gmail filters, they keep running in Gmail even if you delete the app. The free tier includes 3 rules. It works with Gmail only. For mail you want kept but out of view, the Skip the Inbox filter above remains the right tool.
