Why are emails missing from my Gmail inbox?

Last reviewed: October 4, 2026 · Markdown version

Mail that vanishes from the inbox has usually been moved, not lost: archived, sent to Spam or Trash by a filter, or deleted on another device or mail app. Google's troubleshooting page opens with the same short list and then walks through search, filters and forwarding (Gmail messages are missing, read 4 October 2026). Work through it in the order below; each step rules out one cause.

Search everywhere, not just the inbox

Start by widening the search. Google's steps: in the search bar click Show search options, change the "All Mail" dropdown to Mail & Spam & Trash, type anything you remember from the message, and search. If you are unsure of the details, Google says to "leave the fields blank" (the Gmail messages are missing page above). If the message turns up with no Inbox label on it, it was archived: "it no longer appears in your inbox, but you can still find it under the “All mail” label." (Archive Gmail messages, read 4 October 2026). If it is sitting in Spam, Google's advice is the button: "To prevent Gmail from automatically sending an email to Spam, report the email as “Not spam.”" (the missing-messages page again).

Look for a filter that hides it

A filter you made months ago keeps working long after you forget it. Google's instruction is to open Settings, See all settings, the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab, and look for filters containing "Delete it" or "Skip Inbox" (the Gmail messages are missing page above). The first sends matching mail to Trash; the second archives it the moment it arrives, the setting explained on making mail skip the inbox. Edit or delete the culprit.

Check forwarding and other mail apps

Gmail can be told what to do with its own copy when it forwards mail, and a mail program reading your account can delete or archive as well. Under the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab, Google recommends "Keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox" (Automatically forward Gmail messages to another account, read 4 October 2026). Google's missing-mail page repeats the advice for POP users: if you see "Delete Gmail's copy" or "Archive Gmail's copy", switch to keeping it. It also warns that a forwarding address you do not recognise can mean "someone may have unauthorized access to your account" (the Gmail messages are missing page above). It also points to the Third-party apps & services list in your Google Account: remove any app or service you do not recognise or no longer use.

When it was deleted

Google is blunt about deletions elsewhere: "There’s only one copy of every email." Delete a message on a phone, a tablet, or a program such as Apple Mail that is synced with the account, and Google says it "is deleted forever". Its timetable for the bins: "Emails in your trash or spam are permanently deleted after 30 days or when you manually empty your trash or spam." Discarded drafts are gone too: "When you discard a draft, you can’t recover it." (all from the Gmail messages are missing page above). The page also has a "Request email recovery" section, which it shows only once you are signed in; signed out, as we read it, it says nothing about what the request covers. What can still be done after Trash is emptied is on recovering mail after emptying Trash, and the timing is on how often Gmail empties Trash.
