Is it your phone or your Google account that's full?

"Storage full" can mean two completely different things: the physical space on your phone, or the cloud storage of your Google account — which Google describes as "up to 15 GB of storage, which is shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos" (How your Google storage works, read 23 September 2026). They fill up independently, their warnings look confusingly similar, and the fix for one does nothing for the other. One minute of checking saves an afternoon of deleting the wrong things.

Which warning did you actually get?

What you sawWhich storage it meansWhere to check
A storage warning from Google about your account, by email or inside Gmail, Drive or PhotosGoogle account (cloud)Google One storage manager
Gmail refusing to send or receive; senders getting their messages backGoogle account (cloud)Google One storage manager
Google Photos no longer backing upGoogle account (cloud)Google One storage manager
A phone alert such as "Storage Almost Full", or no room to download appsPhone (device)Phone Settings (below)

The three cloud rows are Google's own list of what a full account does: "you won't be able to upload or create files in Drive, send or receive emails in Gmail, or back up photos or videos to Google Photos", and "Messages sent to you go back to the sender" (Manage your storage in Drive, Gmail & Photos, read 23 September 2026).

Check your Google account storage — one minute

Open the Google One storage manager while signed in to the account that got the warning. Google's help describes where the breakdown is: "To find how much storage you use by service, tap Usage details." That split is the whole diagnosis. Whatever product holds the most space is the one to clean — deleting email cannot help an account that photos filled, and deleting photos cannot help an account that email filled.

Check your phone storage — one minute

If the phone is what's full, look at the camera roll, downloaded videos, and messaging-app media — WhatsApp, for example, can be set to download photos, voice messages, videos and documents automatically on mobile data, Wi-Fi or roaming (How to configure auto-download, WhatsApp Help for Android, read 23 September 2026). Both systems offer help: Apple's storage screen can "Offload the app", which "frees up storage used by the app, but keeps its documents and data" (How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad, read 23 September 2026), and Android can "automatically archive apps you don't use often to free up space for new apps" (Free up storage on your Android device, read 23 September 2026). Cleaning up your Google account is not the fix for a full phone — the two are measured separately.

Why this mix-up is so common

A Google storage warning can reach you inside Gmail, so it reads like a mailbox problem — but the number it is about is the shared account quota, which counts Photos and Drive as well as mail. Meanwhile your phone shows its own, unrelated storage warnings on the same screen you read email on. Two systems, both saying "storage", neither saying clearly which one they mean. Checking the two screens above is the only reliable way to know.

Where our app fits, for honesty's sake: Adinand Email Cleaner helps with exactly one of these five situations — a Google account where the storage really is email. For every other row of that table, the fixes above are the ones that work.
