How do I search Gmail for emails from a specific date?

Put the day between two operators: after: the day before it and before: the day after it. Google's operator reference describes after:, before:, older: and newer: together as a way to "Search for emails received during a certain time period", and accepts the date written either way round, after:2004/04/16 or after:04/16/2004 (Refine searches in Gmail, read 21 October 2026). So for mail from 15 March 2025 you would type after:2025/03/14 before:2025/03/16. If you would rather not type operators at all, Gmail has two point-and-click routes, covered below.

Why the range brackets the day

Google's operator reference (Refine searches in Gmail, cited above) gives examples but does not spell out whether the date you type is itself part of the result, so a range that sits one day either side is the version that cannot miss. The cost is that you may see a few messages from the neighbouring days, which are easy to skip past. The finer points of where a day starts and ends, including a note in Google's developer documentation about time zones, are on deleting emails by date; nothing about them changes when you are only looking.

Without operators: the date chip and Date within

Google's search page lists both (Search in Gmail, read 21 October 2026):

The phone pages list chips and operators for narrowing a search, and they do not include the Show search options form, so on a phone the chip or typed operators are what you have.

Combine the date with whatever else you remember

A date alone can still return hundreds of messages. Adding one more detail usually gets it to a screenful. Google's search page says "you can combine multiple search operators", and the date ones mix with any other:

The full list is on our operators page.

Seeing the oldest emails first

This is the question people ask most after searching by date, and the honest answer is that Gmail's search page does not offer it. Google says you can sort results "by relevancy or by chronological order" by switching Most relevant to Most recent, on the computer and in both apps (the Search in Gmail pages above). Most recent puts the newest at the top; none of the three versions of the page describes an oldest-first order.

Our workaround is to search with an end date instead of a start date. before:2015/01/01 shows only mail older than 2015, so the earliest messages in your account are no longer buried under ten years of newer ones. Move the date back a year at a time until the results thin out, and the last screen is the start of your mailbox. For a rolling cut-off, older_than: does the same job and has its own page.

If the search comes back empty

Two settings on Google's page catch people out. Mail in Spam and Trash is left out: "By default, emails in Spam and Trash aren’t included in a standard search", and the fix on a computer is Show search options, then "Mail & Spam & Trash" in the Search menu. And without a connection, "you can only search for emails synced with your device", which matters in the phone apps when the date you want is years back. Both come from the Search in Gmail page cited above. Other reasons a search misses are on Gmail search not working.
