How do I sort my emails by sender in Gmail?
Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Markdown version
You cannot reorder the Gmail inbox by sender. The only sorting Google documents is for search results: "You can sort search results by relevancy or by chronological order. To sort your results, select Most relevant or Most recent" (Search in Gmail, read 15 October 2026). What works in place of a sort is a search on the sender, which gathers everything one person or company has sent you into a single list.
What Google's search page offers, and what it leaves out
The Search in Gmail page exists in three versions, for a computer, for Android and for iPhone & iPad, and all three carry the same two sort choices quoted above. None of the three mentions sorting by sender, by name or alphabetically (Search in Gmail, Android and Search in Gmail, iPhone & iPad, both read 15 October 2026). So if you have seen a column header you could click in another mail program, Gmail's help does not describe one.
Gathering one sender's mail
Three routes lead to the same list:
- The From chip. Run any search, then pick the chip under the search box that Google describes as "From: Search for anything from a specific email address." The chips appear in the app as well; on a phone you tap one.
- Advanced search. On a computer, click Show search options and fill in the From field, then Search (the Search in Gmail page).
- The operator. Type
from:and the address. Google's operator table lists it as "Find emails sent from a specific person." withfrom:amy@example.comas the example (Refine searches in Gmail, read 15 October 2026).
Two details from Google's search page change what comes back. "If you search for a person’s email address, the results show emails that include their alias." To narrow it, wrap the term in quotes: "To limit the search to only the original email, enclose the search in quotes." The same page adds that a from: search also surfaces Drive files that address has shared with you.
Two or three senders side by side
The operator page joins senders with OR, and gives curly braces as the shorthand: from:amy OR from:david, or {from:amy from:david} (the Refine searches page above). That is as close as Gmail's documentation comes to a grouped view: one list holding a handful of named senders. Pick Most recent above the results if you want them in date order. More combinations are on using Gmail's search operators.
Keeping a sender's mail together from now on
A search is a moment; a filter is permanent. Build the same From search into a filter that applies a label, and that sender's mail collects under the label as it arrives, which is the nearest thing Gmail has to a sender folder. How Gmail filters work covers the steps, and adding labels covers the label half. If the point of finding them is to get rid of them, deleting everything from one sender picks up from the search.
Seeing every sender at once
The question underneath "sort by sender" is often "who sends me the most?" Gmail's search and operator pages, as read today, describe nothing that lists your senders or counts their messages (the Search in Gmail and Refine searches pages above). Each search answers for one address you already know.
Adinand Email Cleaner was built for that list. It groups your Gmail by sender, so the whole mailbox becomes a list of senders with the measured space each one takes, and you can clear one with a tap. Know its limits before you install it. It is a cleanup view, not a way to re-sort Gmail's own inbox, and clearing a sender moves that mail to Gmail's Trash, where it stays recoverable for 30 days. It works with Gmail only, on iPhone, iPad and Android, and it asks Gmail for message headers, never message bodies.
