Why is the Gmail app so slow?

Usually it is the device, not the mailbox. Gmail is a search engine with a mailbox attached, and its servers do not care whether you have 500 messages or 500,000. What a phone cares about is free storage, memory pressure, cached data and how much the app is being asked to do in the background.

The usual causes, roughly in order

The phone is nearly full. A device with little free storage slows down everywhere, and mail apps — which write constantly — feel it early. This is device storage, not your Google account; they are different things and the warnings look alike.
A large local cache. Attachments and message data accumulate on the device. Clearing the app's cache is safe — it is a copy, not your mail — and often the single most effective step.
Too many accounts syncing at once. Each one is real background work, and four accounts on an older phone is a lot of it.
An old app version or a low-memory device. Unfashionable answers that are frequently the true ones.
A giant single thread. Hundreds of replies with quoted history in one conversation will make any client stutter when it opens.

The honest part: what cleaning your mailbox will and will not do

Deleting 30,000 emails will not make Gmail's search faster — it was never slow at scale, and we are not going to claim otherwise. What it can do is reduce what your device syncs and caches, and it removes the storage problem that makes everything else worse. If the app is slow because the phone has 500 MB free, the mailbox is at most half the story.

What to try, in a sensible order

Check free space on the device, and clear the Gmail app's cache.
Check your Google account storage separately — a full account misbehaves in ways that look like slowness.
Reduce the days of mail the app syncs, in Gmail's own settings.
Update the app; restart the phone. In that order, because one of them is free.
Then, if the mailbox is genuinely enormous, thin it — for the storage, not for the speed.
