How do I unsubscribe from emails on Android?

Last reviewed: October 1, 2026 · Markdown version

In the Gmail app, open one of the sender's emails and tap Unsubscribe next to their name, then tap Unsubscribe again (or Go to website) in the pop-up. Google's Android steps are exactly that, with one expectation to set: "After you unsubscribe, it may take a few days for you to stop receiving emails from the mailing list." (Unsubscribe from an email (Android), read 1 October 2026). The same thing on a computer, and the wider picture, is on how to unsubscribe from emails in Gmail.

Three places in the Android app

  1. The button in an email, as above. Google notes it "might only unsubscribe you from a single mailing list from the sender", which is why a shop can keep writing to you about something else.
  2. Manage subscriptions. Tap Menu, then Manage subscriptions, and tap Unsubscribe next to a sender. From this list, "Gmail unsubscribes you from all active mailing lists related to the sender." Google says it "is gradually rolling out and may not be available to you yet" (Manage your subscriptions in Gmail (Android), read 1 October 2026).
  3. Unsubscribe tips. Less known: Gmail can suggest unsubscribing from mail you rarely read. Tap Menu, Settings, your address, then under "Inbox Tips" tap Inbox Tips settings and check Unsubscribe tips (the Unsubscribe from an email (Android) page above).

What happens afterwards

Gmail does not wait for the sender to comply. "When you unsubscribe from a sender, any new emails from them go to your spam folder", with a banner saying why, and "To move emails from the sender back to your inbox, tap Report not spam." (the Manage your subscriptions (Android) page above). If you change your mind later, resubscribing covers both halves of undoing it.

When there is no Unsubscribe button

Google's Android page does not say when the button appears and when it does not (Unsubscribe from an email (Android), read 1 October 2026). What Google does publish is the rule for big senders: anyone sending more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail must make marketing mail "support one-click unsubscribe, and include a clearly visible unsubscribe link in the message body" (Email sender guidelines, read 1 October 2026). For everyone else the same page only advises: "Always give recipients an easy way to unsubscribe from your messages." So, in order:

Where the app comes in

Gmail's tools stop future mail; they leave every message a sender already sent where it is. Adinand Email Cleaner on Android (8.0 or later) lists your Gmail by sender, so the unsubscribe decision and the clear-out of that sender's backlog happen on one screen. Its Unsubscribe tries the sender's one-click request first, then their unsubscribe page, then their unsubscribe address, and it acts only when you tap. It reads headers, never message bodies, and it works with Gmail only, so mail in another provider's account is out of its reach.
