How do I find archived emails in Gmail?
Last reviewed: October 5, 2026 · Markdown version
Open All mail, or search for in:archive. Archiving in Gmail only takes a message out of the inbox. In Google's words, "When you archive a message, it no longer appears in your inbox, but you can still find it under the “All mail” label." (Archive Gmail messages, read 5 October 2026). Browse All mail when you know roughly when it arrived; use the search when you only want what has been archived.
On a computer
All mail is tucked under More in the left-hand list. Google's path: "On the left, click More All Mail." To narrow it down, type in:archive into the search bar at the top (the Archive Gmail messages page above). Add words after it to search inside the archive only; Google's operator list gives in:archive payment reminder as its example and describes the operator as "Search for archived messages." (Refine searches in Gmail, read 5 October 2026).
In the Gmail app
On Android, tap Menu at the top left, then All mail; the search bar takes in:archive just as the computer does (Archive Gmail messages (Android), read 5 October 2026). The iPhone and iPad app uses the same Menu, then All mail route (Archive Gmail messages (iPhone & iPad), read 5 October 2026).
Searches that help, and one that is not on Google's list
Combine in:archive with the operators you already use: a sender, a word, a date. Two others from Google's operator page are worth knowing. in:anywhere goes wider than All mail: it will "Find emails across Gmail. This includes emails in Spam and Trash." A minus sign will "Exclude emails from your search criteria." (the Refine searches page above). One caution from the same page: with a minus, "conversations with excluded criteria may still appear", and the reason given is that "Gmail identifies matching messages first."
If you have seen -in:inbox or -label:inbox suggested for this, note that Google's operator table, as read today, does not list in:inbox or label:inbox at all; it lists in:archive for exactly this job (the Refine searches page above). Use the documented one. More on combining operators: using Gmail search operators.
Moving it back to the inbox
On a computer, tick the message and click Move to Inbox at the top. In the app, touch and hold it, then More at the top right, then Move to Inbox (the archive pages above). Sometimes Gmail does it for you: "If someone replies to a message you archive, it returns to your inbox."
Why mail is in the archive when you never archived it
If you keep finding mail in All mail that you do not remember filing, one of these is usually behind it:
- A swipe. The app lets you make Archive a left or right swipe action, set on Android under Menu, Settings, General settings, Swipe actions, and on iPhone under Settings, Inbox customizations, Mail swipe actions (the Android and iPhone archive pages above). A brush of the thumb files a message out of sight.
- A notification. Android lets you "tap an action, like Reply or Archive" straight from the alert (Control notifications on Android, read 5 October 2026).
- A muted thread. Replies to a conversation you muted "skip your inbox and go directly to your archive" (Mute Gmail messages, read 5 October 2026); search
is:muted, or read what muting does. - A filter that skips the inbox. Google names that filter box "Skip the Inbox (Archive it)" (Tips to optimize your Gmail inbox, read 5 October 2026); making mail skip the inbox shows where those filters live.
A detail that confuses people on tabbed inboxes: "Archived emails don’t appear in categories." (Organize your emails into categories, read 5 October 2026). So a message archived from Promotions or Updates will not be waiting in that tab; look in All mail.
If an in:anywhere search does not find it either, the message is not in the archive, Spam or Trash; emails missing from your Gmail inbox works through the other possibilities. Whether archiving was the right call in the first place is a separate question, answered on should I archive or delete emails.
