How do I make emails bigger in Gmail?

Make the browser bigger on a computer, and the phone's text bigger for the Gmail app. Google's accessibility page for Gmail on a computer does not list a text-size control inside Gmail; for low vision it says to "refer to your platform’s related resources", and the features it names there include "Text scaling" and "Screen magnification" (Accessibility in Gmail (Computer), read 3 October 2026). The Android version of that page (read 3 October 2026) does the same, naming text scaling among the phone's own features. So the size you get in Gmail is set one level up.
On a computer: zoom, or just the font
In Chrome, Google's instructions are: open the More menu and, next to "Zoom", choose "Make everything larger: Click Zoom in." The keyboard does the same: Ctrl and + on Windows and Linux, ⌘ and + on a Mac (Change text, image & video sizes (zoom), read 3 October 2026). Chrome remembers zoom levels site by site, and you can clear them all from one place under Settings, Privacy and security, Site Settings, Additional content settings, Zoom levels.
To grow only the words, Chrome has a Font size option under Settings, Appearance, with a caveat in Google's own words: "Some websites don't let browsers change only the text size. For those sites, Chrome won’t be able to adjust the font size." The page does not say whether Gmail is one of those sites (same page). If the font option seems to do nothing in Gmail, use page zoom instead.
Density is spacing, not size
Gmail's Density setting sounds like the answer and is not. Google describes it as choosing "how spacious or compact you'd like to list messages in your inbox": open Settings and, under Density, pick Default, Comfortable or Compact. Default adds something rather than enlarging anything: "If you choose Default , you'll get a preview of your attachments from your inbox." (Tips to read & send email in Gmail, read 3 October 2026). Comfortable gives the list more breathing room; for bigger letters, go back to the zoom above.
The Gmail app on Android
Android's own setting is the lever. Open the Settings app, search for Font size and move the slider; Display size, found the same way, enlarges everything on screen, not just text. From Quick Settings, Google says "You can adjust font size up to 200%." It also warns: "The font size setting doesn't apply to some apps." (Change text & display settings, read 3 October 2026). Inside Gmail there is one related switch, Auto-fit messages, which Google describes this way: "When this setting is on, messages are resized to make them easier to read." (Change your Gmail settings (Android), read 3 October 2026).
On iPhone
Apple's setting reaches "Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Phone, Notes, and other apps that support Dynamic Type": go to Settings, Display & Brightness, Text Size, and drag the slider. For larger sizes still, Settings, Accessibility, Display & Text Size, Larger Text. Apple's caution is fair: "Making the text too large might make it hard to tap buttons or other functions within apps." (Change the font size on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, read 3 October 2026).
Whether the Gmail app follows that slider is something neither company states outright. Apple's list does not name Gmail, and Google's iPhone accessibility page only lists text scaling among the iPhone features that "may be useful" (Accessibility in Gmail (iPhone & iPad), read 3 October 2026). Change the size, open Gmail and look; if Apple Mail is where you read Gmail, Apple's sentence covers it directly.
