Can I create new categories in Gmail?

No. Gmail's inbox categories are a fixed set, and Google's help page says so in as many words: "You can only choose from the current categories. You can't create your own categories." (Organize your emails into categories, read 5 October 2026). The same page points to the workaround in its closing tips: "While you can't create custom categories, you can use labels to organize your emails." Labels, a filter to fill them, and an inbox type that gives a label its own section get you most of the way to a category of your own.
The five Gmail gives you
When the inbox type is Default, Gmail sorts mail into Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums. Forums is the one people forget: Google describes it as "Messages from online groups, discussion boards, and mailing lists." You can switch categories off, but you cannot add to the list. On a computer: Settings, then under "Inbox type" in Quick settings select Default, click Customize, tick the ones you want, and Save (the categories page above).
Two you can search but never show as tabs
Gmail sorts more finely behind the scenes than the tabs suggest. Its search operator list includes category:reservations and category:purchases beside the five tab names (Refine searches in Gmail, read 5 October 2026). The categories page shows what reservations collects, "flight confirmations, hotel bookings, or restaurant reservations", and then closes the door: "you can’t add "Reservations" as an inbox category." If what you wanted was a Travel tab, that search may already be it. Save it as a filter or a Multiple Inboxes section (below) to keep it one click away.
Labels are the category you name yourself
Google's labels page opens with the same use case you came here with: "To organize your emails into categories like “Work,” “Family,” or “To-Do,” you can create labels in Gmail." (Create & manage labels in Gmail, read 5 October 2026). On a computer, click Create new label next to "Labels" on the left, give it a name, and optionally nest it under another. The ceiling is high: "You can create up to 5,000 labels."
The difference that matters: Gmail chooses a message's category for you, while a label goes on only when you, or a filter you wrote, put it there. The labels page adds a second warning worth reading before you rebuild your inbox around them: "Labels are different from folders." The steps for creating, colouring and nesting are on adding labels in Gmail, and what they are good for is on using labels in Gmail.
Make the label fill itself
A category sorts mail without you lifting a finger; a label only does that once a filter is behind it. Gmail filters can "send email to a label, or archive, delete, star, or automatically forward your mail" (Create rules to filter your emails, read 5 October 2026). Search for the senders or words that define your new "category", click Create filter, and tick Apply the label. Add "Skip the Inbox (Archive it)" if you want that mail out of the main list too; both box names are from Google's own walkthrough (Tips to optimize your Gmail inbox, read 5 October 2026). Setting up Gmail filters walks through the screens.
A filter can also push a sender into one of the five existing tabs: among the filter options, the categories page lists one that "Directs their email to a specific category". That is the fix when the category is right but Gmail keeps getting the sender wrong.
Show your label like a tab
Two inbox types will put a label on the inbox screen itself. Multiple Inboxes: "Gmail will add additional sections to your inbox. You can use search operators or custom labels to create each section." Priority Inbox lets you pick its sections, including "a label that you have made." (Change your Gmail inbox layout, read 5 October 2026). Inbox type is a single choice on that page, so as we read it, choosing either one means giving up the Default tabs in exchange for your own sections. The setup for each type, and which ones the phone apps support, is on changing your Gmail inbox type.
