Why is my Gmail Spam folder empty?

Usually because nothing in it is old enough to have stayed, or because something you set up is keeping mail out. An empty Spam folder is not a fault in itself. The five reasons below are in the order we would check them.
1. It emptied itself
Spam runs on a 30-day clock. Google's page on missing mail says "Emails in your trash or spam are permanently deleted after 30 days or when you manually empty your trash or spam" (Gmail messages are missing, read 29 October 2026). If little spam reaches you, a month is long enough for the folder to be empty most of the time. Clicking "Delete all spam messages now" clears it at once too (Report spam in Gmail, read 29 October 2026), so check whether anyone else with access to the account does that.
2. A filter is keeping mail out
A Gmail filter can carry a "Never send it to Spam" box; Google's steps for it end "Next to “Never send it to Spam,” check the box" (Fix issues with valid emails in Spam, read 29 October 2026). A filter like that, written broadly, sends everything it matches to the inbox instead. Other filters can move mail away before it ever reaches Spam: the missing-mail page says to look for "filters that automatically archive or move incoming emails to your trash" (the Gmail messages are missing page above). Both live under Settings, See all settings, Filters and Blocked Addresses.
3. Your own clicks have trained it
Google lists three ways to keep a sender out of Spam: remove their email from Spam, after which "future emails from that sender won’t go to Spam"; add them to Google Contacts, after which "their emails won’t go to Spam"; or the filter above (the Fix issues with valid emails in Spam page above). Mail you once rescued from Spam, and mail from your contacts, will not show up there again, which is the intended effect.
4. You are looking in another app
In Gmail on a computer the folder is tucked away: "On the left, in the main menu, click More Spam" (the Fix issues page above). In a mail program connected by IMAP, Gmail's developer reference lists Spam among the special folders under a [Gmail] prefix, as "[Gmail]/Spam" (IMAP Extensions, read 29 October 2026). Whether that folder shows up depends on the program and on Gmail's Show in IMAP setting, which labels in IMAP clients covers. The missing-mail page adds one more trap: mail deleted "in another email client that’s synced with your Gmail account, such as Apple Mail" is gone from Gmail too (the missing-mail page above).
5. It is a work or school account
"If you use Gmail through your work, school, or organization, your admin might set controls to mark certain emails as spam" (the Report spam in Gmail page above). Organisation-level controls can treat mail differently from a personal account, so for a work address the administrator is the person who can say where suspected spam goes. The page does not describe what those controls do to the Spam folder itself.
If you were expecting a particular email
Search for it everywhere with in:anywhere and the sender's address; the operator will "Find emails across Gmail. This includes emails in Spam and Trash" (Refine searches in Gmail, read 29 October 2026). If it is not there at all, it was most likely deleted for good or never arrived, and what the Spam folder does and the missing-mail checks above are the next stops.
