How do I delete every email I've already read in Gmail?

Last reviewed: October 29, 2026 · Markdown version

Gmail has no "delete read mail" button, but its search has a read state, and a search result can be deleted in one go. The operator is is:read, which sits in Google's list of status searches beside is:unread, is:starred and is:important (Refine searches in Gmail, read 29 October 2026).

On a computer, all of it at once

  1. Type is:read in the search box. To keep it to the inbox, make it is:read in:inbox.
  2. Above the messages, tick the Select box. That selects "all messages on the current page" only (Delete messages in Gmail, read 29 October 2026).
  3. A notice appears. Google's example of it reads "All 50 conversations on this page are selected. Select all 2,000 conversations in Inbox.", and its instruction is "To select all conversations, click the link in the notification."
  4. Click Delete at the top.

Read is not the same as finished with

Before step 4, think about what "read" sweeps in: receipts, tickets, the confirmation you will want next spring. Three narrowings we would add, each built from operators on Google's reference page:

Put together: is:read in:inbox older_than:1y -is:starred. There is a catch with the minus sign, and Google states it outright: "When you use negative search operators, conversations with excluded criteria may still appear," because "Gmail identifies matching messages first. For example, if you search for -is:starred, Gmail can find an entire conversation if it contains at least one unstarred message, even if other emails in that same conversation are starred" (the Refine searches page above). Deleting from that result would take the starred message with its thread. Scroll the results before you delete, or open the long threads.

In the Gmail app

The same search works in the app's search box. Selection is the limit: touch and hold a message, tap the box next to "Select all", and "By default, Gmail selects up to 50 messages to delete"; for the next 50, scroll to the top and select all again (Delete messages in Gmail (Android) and (iPhone & iPad), read 29 October 2026). For a mailbox of read mail running into the thousands, a computer is the faster tool.

Thirty days to change your mind

Everything deleted goes to Trash first. "Up to 30 days after deletion" you can find and restore it; after that "The message is permanently deleted" (the computer delete page above). If what you wanted was a cleaner inbox rather than a smaller account, archiving the same search keeps the mail and clears the view; archive or delete weighs the two.
