# Why is my Gmail lagging in the browser? — Adinand Email Cleaner

**When Gmail lags in a browser, Google's own checklist points at the browser first: an old version, an extension, or a stale cache. Only after that does it look at the account.** Google's personal help page covers the case in one line: "If Gmail is slow or isn't loading correctly in your browser, you may need to check your browser, internet connection, or device for issues" ([*Gmail won’t load*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7074871), read 27 September 2026). ## First, rule out Google <p>The same page starts with an outside check: "To check the status of Gmail, open the Google Workspace Status Dashboard." If Gmail is having a bad day, nothing on your computer will fix it.</p>

## Then the browser, in this order <ol> <li>**Supported and current.** Gmail "works best in the newest and last prior version" of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Microsoft Edge, and needs "cookies and JavaScript turned on" ([*Supported browsers*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6557), read 27 September 2026).</li> <li>**Extensions.** "Some extensions or add-ons on your browser or applications on your computer may cause Gmail to not work." Google's method is to turn them off one by one and reload, and "If available, try using your browser’s incognito or private browsing mode" (the *Gmail won’t load* page).</li> <li>**Cache and cookies.** Clear them, then open Gmail again (same page).</li> <li>**Connection and device.** Restart, switch Wi-Fi off and on, try another network. Google also warns that "Gmail may not load in browsers on older devices", so trying another computer tells you which side the problem is on.</li> </ol>

## Then the account <p>Google's longer list is written for Workspace administrators, addressed to "You and your users" ([*Gmail is slow for my users*](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/support/troubleshooting/gmail-is-slow-for-my-users), read 27 September 2026):</p> <ul> <li>**Page size.** "To load Gmail more quickly, reduce the number of messages Gmail shows on a page": Settings → See all settings → Maximum page size.</li> <li>**Labels and filters.** "Delete Gmail labels to stay under 500 labels (including sublabels)" and "Delete Gmail filters to stay under 500 filters."</li> <li>**Big operations.** When deleting or emptying Trash, "stay under 1,000 messages at a time".</li> <li>**Other apps on the account.** A mail program that "tries to check for mail too often" can hit request limits; Google suggests reviewing connected devices and apps.</li> </ul> <p>Those numbers come from the admin page; Google's personal help page does not repeat them, so treat them as guidance rather than a promise about a personal account (the *Gmail won’t load* page).</p>

## What is not on either list <p>Neither Google page names the number of emails you keep as a cause of lag (the *Gmail is slow for my users* page). On the evidence of Google's own pages, then, mailbox size is not the place to start. A huge mailbox may still be a storage problem or an attention problem, and those are [covered separately](https://adinandemail.com/answers/too-many-emails).</p>
