# Why do emails go to Promotions in Gmail? — Adinand Email Cleaner

**Because Gmail decided it looks like marketing. With the Default inbox type, Gmail sorts every incoming message into a tab by itself, and Promotions is the tab for "Deals, offers, and other promotional emails."** Primary, by contrast, is for "Emails from people you know and messages that don’t appear in other tabs." ([*Organize your emails into categories*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/3094499), read 7 October 2026). What a promotional email is, in Google's sense and in law, is covered on [what promotional emails are](https://adinandemail.com/answers/promotional-emails). This page is about the sorting, and about overruling it.

## What Google says about how it decides
Very little. The categories page names the five tabs and what each is for, and stops there: it does not list the signals Gmail reads to pick a tab, and it gives no way for a sender or a reader to request one (the *Organize your emails into categories* page, read 7 October 2026). That is why a shop's order confirmation can land in Updates one week and its next email in Promotions.

The nearest thing to a hint is written for senders. Google's sender guidelines, whose stated aim is to reduce the chance that mail is "sent to spam or blocked by Gmail", say that "Messages of the same category should have the same From: email address", with "Promotional messages: deals@example.com" as the example, and "Don't mix different types of content in the same message. For example, don't include promotions in sales receipt messages." ([*Email sender guidelines*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/81126), read 7 October 2026). The guidelines do not mention inbox tabs. Our reading is that a receipt carrying a sale banner is the kind of mixed message Gmail struggles to place, and that is not something you can fix from the receiving end.

## Moving a message to Primary
On a computer, drag the email onto the Primary tab. A confirmation appears at the bottom left, with Undo if you change your mind. In the Android and iPhone apps, open the email, tap More, then Move to, and pick the category ([*Organize your emails into categories (Android)*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/3094499?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 7 October 2026). Google says each move helps Gmail "sort your email more accurately" over time. The pages we read today do not describe a prompt that applies one move to all of a sender's future mail, and they do not say how many corrections it takes before the sorting changes.

## Making it stick for one sender
For a sender you never want in Promotions, two tools on Google's categories page are firmer than dragging:

**A filter.** Google lists a filter that "Directs their email to a specific category". Search for the sender with `from:`, choose Create filter, and set the category you want. The filter page's own list of actions does not mention categories ([*Create rules to filter your emails*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6579), read 7 October 2026), so look for the option in the filter dialog itself. [How Gmail filters work](https://adinandemail.com/answers/gmail-filters) covers the dialog.

**A star.** "After you star an email, it appears in the “Primary” category and the category it’s already in." On a computer, this depends on a box in the category settings: "Include starred in Primary."

## Turning the tab off
If you would rather have no Promotions tab at all, you can switch that one category off. On a computer: Settings, Default under Inbox type, Customize, untick Promotions, Save. On Android: Menu, Settings, your account, Inbox type, Default Inbox, Inbox categories, then uncheck it (both from the categories pages above). Because Primary is described as the home of "messages that don’t appear in other tabs", that mail should then show up in Primary instead. To lose every tab, change the inbox type away from Default; [changing the inbox type](https://adinandemail.com/answers/change-gmail-inbox-type) lists the options.

One consequence to plan for: on Android, "By default, notifications are turned on for any messages in your Primary label." ([*Change Gmail notifications (Android)*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/1075549?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 7 October 2026). Moving shop mail back into Primary also moves it into the stream that buzzes your phone. If the real complaint is the opposite, important mail being misjudged, [why Gmail marks mail Important](https://adinandemail.com/answers/gmail-going-to-important-folder) covers the other sorting system Gmail runs alongside the tabs.
