# Focused Inbox vs Other in Outlook.com — Adinand Email Cleaner

**Focused and Other are two tabs over the same Inbox.** “Focused Inbox separates your inbox into two tabs—Focused and Other. Your most important email messages are on the Focused tab while the rest remain easily accessible—but out of the way—on the Other tab.” (Microsoft Support, [“Focused Inbox for Outlook”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/mail/focused-inbox-for-outlook), read 28 October 2026)

## What lands in Other

Microsoft: “the system takes into account emails and contacts with whom you interact, and filters out noisy sources like automatically generated or bulk email. The more you use it, the better it gets.” (Microsoft Support, [“Focused Inbox for Outlook”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/mail/focused-inbox-for-outlook), read 28 October 2026) That makes Other the natural place to start a cleanup — it is mostly newsletters, promotions and notifications.

## Turn it on or off in Outlook.com

1. “Open Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, or Outlook on the web.”
2. “At the top of the page, select Settings > Mail > Message List.”
3. “In the Focused Inbox section, to turn the option on or off, select the check box to Sort messages into Focused and Other.” then “If you made a change, select Save.” (Microsoft Support, [“Focused Inbox for Outlook”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/mail/focused-inbox-for-outlook), read 28 October 2026)

## Teach it a sender

“From your inbox, select the Focused or Other tab, and then right-click the message you want to move.” Then “Select Always move to Other inbox if you want all future messages from the sender to be delivered to the Other tab.” — or the reverse, “Always move to Focused inbox” (same page).

## Things that surprise people

- **It is not deletion.** Other is still your Inbox. Emptying the Inbox with Empty folder, “If you have Focused inbox selected, you will need to empty your Focused and Other inboxes separately.” (Microsoft Support, [“Delete email in Outlook.com”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/delete-email-in-outlook-com), read 28 October 2026)
- **Not Gmail’s categories.** There is no Promotions or Social tab; the Focused Inbox page describes two tabs only (Microsoft Support, [“Focused Inbox for Outlook”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/mail/focused-inbox-for-outlook), read 28 October 2026).
- **Shared mailboxes.** “If you’re using a shared mailbox, Focused Inbox will not work. This is by design.” (same page)
- **Clutter.** “Focused Inbox will replace Clutter.” (same page)

## Where our app fits

[Adinand Email Cleaner](https://adinandemail.com/outlook) uses this split on Outlook.com: when Focused Inbox is on, its dashboard shows how many emails are in Other — an estimate from a sample of your newest Inbox emails — and lets you clear them sender by sender. With Focused Inbox off, it estimates the bulk mail itself from each email’s headers. On iPhone and iPad it works with Outlook.com, Microsoft work or school accounts and Gmail; the Android app works with Gmail. Processing happens on your device, the app has no servers of its own, and it asks Microsoft for headers, never message bodies. It moves mail to Deleted Items and cannot delete anything permanently. The free tier caps how much it will clean and how many rules you can keep; the [pricing section](https://adinandemail.com/#pricing) has the current numbers.
