# How do I open or import the Gmail MBOX file Google Takeout gives me? — Adinand Email Cleaner

A Takeout mail export is something you read in a mail program on a computer. It is not something Gmail takes back: Gmail's import tool pulls mail from another live account, and none of the Google pages we read describes uploading an archive file to it. What each vendor's documentation says, and where it goes quiet, is below.

## First, find out what is in the download
Google's Takeout page never names the file format for Mail. What it does say is that "Within your archive will be a file named archive_browser.html that will have additional information about the file formats, how to open the file, and view the data", and it recommends "downloading and viewing Takeout exports from a desktop computer, not a mobile device" ([*How to download your Google data*](https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/3024190), read 29 October 2026). Gmail's own export page lists what goes in, "Message content", "Message headers" and "Attachments" among it, and is just as silent on the format ([*Export your data from Gmail*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/10016932), read 29 October 2026).

So the practical first step is on a computer: unzip the archive, open archive_browser.html in a browser, and find the mail file it points to. If the file name ends in `.mbox`, the rest of this page applies.

## On a Mac: Apple Mail
Apple's guide is the clearest of the three we read. It says "Mail can import email messages that have been exported in mbox format from other email apps" ([*Import or export mailboxes in Mail on Mac*](https://support.apple.com/guide/mail/import-or-export-mailboxes-mlhlp1030/mac), read 29 October 2026). The steps:

Choose File > Import Mailboxes.

Pick the source. Apple's wording for a file that did not come from Mail is: "If you’re importing messages from a Windows or UNIX computer, select “Files in mbox format”, then locate the folder containing the files." A Takeout file is neither, and Apple's page does not mention Google, so choosing that option is our reading of which one fits.

Find the result: "The messages are in a new mailbox called Import in the Mail sidebar."

## Thunderbird
Mozilla's import page describes a general tool: Select ≡ > Tools > Import, then choose "either one of the applications or Import from a file" ([*Import settings and data into Thunderbird*](https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-import), read 29 October 2026). That page lists no file types, and the word mbox does not appear on it, so it neither promises nor rules out a Takeout file. It does carry one limit worth knowing before you start: "the Import Tool will currently not support ZIP files larger than 2 GB". Zip is one of the two file types Takeout offers, alongside tgz (the Takeout page above), so unzip a large archive before pointing Thunderbird at it.

## Can it go back into Gmail?
Not by any route Google documents. The import steps on Gmail's page run Settings, Accounts and import, "Import mail and contacts", and the source is another account: "Your other email account needs to have POP access" ([*Add another email account on your computer*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/21289), read 29 October 2026). No step on that page asks for a file. If what you really want is the mail in a different Gmail account, import it from the old account directly while that account still exists; [moving mail to another Gmail account](https://adinandemail.com/answers/move-emails-to-another-gmail-account) has those steps.

## Labels will not come out as folders
Whichever program you use, expect your Gmail labels to be missing as folders. Takeout keeps them, but not in a form mail programs read: "each message's labels are preserved in a special X-Gmail-Labels header in your download file. While no mail client recognizes this header now, most mail clients allow for extensions to be written that could make use of the labels" (the Takeout page above). In Apple Mail that means one Import mailbox to sort by hand.

## Before you rely on the copy
Open a handful of old messages, including some with attachments, in the program you imported into. Do it soon, because "Your archive expires in about 7 days" (the Takeout page above), and a second download means a second export. If the archive is a step towards closing the account, [deleting a Gmail account](https://adinandemail.com/answers/delete-a-gmail-account) covers the order of things.
