**Chat has its own notification switch, separate from the one for email, so you can silence Chat and keep mail alerts, or the other way round.** In the Gmail app on Android, it is Menu, Settings, your account, then untick "Chat notifications" under Notifications ([*Turn Google Chat notifications on or off (Android)*](https://support.google.com/chat/answer/7655718?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), Google Chat Help, read 21 October 2026). The other devices, a temporary pause, and muting just one noisy space are below. Email alerts are covered on [stopping Gmail notifications](https://adinandemail.com/answers/stop-gmail-notifications).

## Turning Chat alerts off in Gmail

**iPhone and iPad:** in the Gmail app, Menu, Settings, then under "Notifications" tap Chat notifications and turn it off ([*Turn Google Chat notifications on or off (iPhone & iPad)*](https://support.google.com/chat/answer/7655718?co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS), read 21 October 2026).

**Computer:** in Gmail, Settings, See all settings, the Chat and Meet tab, then Manage chat settings next to "Chat settings". Under "Desktop notifications", untick "Allow chat notifications" ([*Turn Google Chat notifications on or off*](https://support.google.com/chat/answer/7655718), read 21 October 2026).

**The separate Chat app**, if you also have it installed, has a switch of its own in its settings, under Notifications. Google gives separate steps for each app, so if Chat reaches you through both, change both.

If alerts still get through after that, Google's tip for the phone apps is to turn off Google Chat in your device's own notification settings.

## A pause, not a switch: Do not disturb
For an afternoon of quiet, the Chat status is quicker than any setting. Google describes Do not disturb as muting notifications "on all your devices from Chat or Gmail until you change your status to “Active.”" On a computer, click the down arrow next to your status indicator at the top of Gmail and choose Do not disturb ([*Change your availability status in Google Chat*](https://support.google.com/chat/answer/9093489), read 21 October 2026). Others can see it: Google says people "can tell how long you paused notifications so they don’t expect an immediate response."

One limit is written into Google's notifications page: some Chat apps can post "@notify messages", which "ignore your “Do Not Disturb” status, muted conversations, or notification settings." Google describes them as being "for critical or time-sensitive information", and its page offers no setting that holds them back.

## Muting one space or person
Usually one busy group is the problem, not Chat as a whole. On a computer, open Chat in Gmail, click More options next to the space, then Notifications, and choose a level. Google's list (the notifications page above):

"All: Notifications for all new messages and replies to threads."

"Main conversations: Notifications for all new main conversations, @mentions, and replies to threads you follow."

"For you: Notifications for @mentions and replies to threads you follow."

"None: No notifications, just an indicator for @mentions."

Ticking "Mute conversation" as well stops the space jumping to the top of your list in bold. On Android, the same menu opens when you tap Chat at the bottom of the Gmail app, go to Spaces, and tap and hold the space. Direct messages have a shorter version of the same choice.

## Chat reminders that arrive by email
If the Chat messages you are trying to escape are turning up as emails, that is another setting. Google's page says that "If email notifications are on, you get email reminders for Chat messages you haven’t read for more than 12 hours." On a computer, the Chat notification settings have an "Email notifications" choice: Only @mentions & direct messages, or Off. Google's tip places it next to the desktop switch, in Chat's own settings.
