# How do I know how many emails I have in Gmail? — Adinand Email Cleaner

**On a computer, the number sits above your message list.** Google's own example: "1-42 of 42 means you're viewing messages 1-42 on the page, and you have 42 messages in your inbox" ([*View & find email*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/9259955), read 25 September 2026). Open the view you want counted — Inbox, a label, or All Mail — and read the figure after "of".

## Messages or conversations? <p>With conversation view on, Gmail counts threads, not individual emails. Google's delete page shows the wording its own notification uses: "Select all 2,000 conversations in Inbox" ([*Delete messages in Gmail*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7401), read 25 September 2026). A conversation groups replies together and "breaks off into a new conversation when the subject line changes, or the conversation gets to more than 100 emails" ([*Group emails into conversations*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/5900), read 25 September 2026).</p> <p>To count single emails, turn it off: Settings → See all settings → "Conversation View" → Conversation view off → Save Changes (the *Group emails into conversations* page). Turn it back on afterwards if you prefer threads.</p>

## Counting one slice <p>A total is rarely what you actually need. Search first, then read the counter. All of these are on Google's list of operators ([*Refine searches in Gmail*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7190), read 25 September 2026):</p> <ul> <li>`in:anywhere` — everything, and Google notes this "includes emails in Spam and Trash".</li> <li>`is:unread` — the ones you never opened.</li> <li>`older_than:1y` — everything from before the last year.</li> <li>`has:attachment larger:10M` — the heavy ones.</li> <li>`from:` plus an address — how much one sender has sent you.</li> </ul>

## What Google's instructions do not cover <p>The counter instructions are for the web: the guide says "The instructions in this guide are primarily web only", and its worked example is a 42-message inbox (the *View & find email* page). It does not describe how the counter reads on a mailbox of tens of thousands, so if the figure there looks vague, narrow the search until it gives a number you trust.</p> <p>Google also offers a Dashboard that shows "a summary of the Google services you use and the data saved in your Google Account", reached from your Google Account → Data & privacy ([*Get a summary of data in your Google Account*](https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/162744), read 25 September 2026). That page does not say which figures it shows for Gmail, so we are not going to promise a number from it.</p>

## The count is not the size <p>If you are counting because storage is tight, the number of emails is the wrong measure. Google counts "Gmail messages and attachments, which includes your Spam and Trash folders" against the shared 15 GB, which is a limit in bytes ([*How your Google storage works*](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/9312312), read 25 September 2026). Ten thousand short notifications can weigh less than a handful of old video attachments.
