# Is there a limit on Gmail emails? — Adinand Email Cleaner

**Google's storage pages put no cap on the number of emails you can keep — the limit is in gigabytes — and there are four separate limits that people mean when they ask this.** They have nothing to do with each other, and knowing which one you have hit decides what to do next. All four numbers below are Google's own, each cited to the page it came from.

## 1. Storage: 15 GB, and it is not only Gmail's <p>A personal Google Account gets "up to 15 GB of storage which is shared among Drive, Gmail, and Photos", and at the limit you won't be able to "send or receive emails in Gmail" ([*Manage your storage in Drive, Gmail & Photos*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6558), read 23 September 2026). The limit Google documents is bytes, not a *number* of messages, and "Gmail messages and attachments, which includes your Spam and Trash folders" all count toward it ([*How your Google storage works*](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/9312312), read 23 September 2026). ## 2. Sending: 500 a day, 500 recipients <p>Google's page says you may hit the sending limit if you send to "more than 500 recipients in a single email" or have "more than 500 emails sent in a day"; work and school accounts are pointed to a separate page. The error reads "You have reached a limit for sending mail", and it is temporary — "you should be able to send emails again within 1 to 24 hours". ## 3. Attachments: 25 MB per message <p>"For personal Gmail accounts, the limit is 25 MB", and Google applies it to your "total attachment size", not to each file ([*Send attachments with your Gmail message*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6584), read 23 September 2026). Go over it and Gmail does not refuse — it "automatically removes the attachment and adds it as a Google Drive link in the email", which is a different thing from sending the file and occasionally surprises the recipient. ## 4. Labels: 5,000 <p>"You can create up to 5,000 labels" ([*Create & manage labels in Gmail*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/118708), read 23 September 2026). Almost nobody reaches this, but it is the one real ceiling on how finely you can organise, and it matters if you are generating labels from a script or a filter rule set. ## Which one have you hit? <ul> <li>Mail bouncing back to senders, nothing arriving ⇒ **storage** (Google: "Messages sent to you go back to the sender").</li> <li>"You have reached a limit for sending mail" ⇒ **sending**, and it clears itself within a day.</li> <li>Your file turned into a link ⇒ **attachment size**.</li> <li>A new label will not save and you already have thousands ⇒ possibly **labels**. Google gives the 5,000 figure but does not describe what you see when you reach it.</li> </ul>

## The limit nobody publishes <p>None of the four is the one that actually bites. The real ceiling is attention: the number of distinct senders you can hold open decisions about.
