# How to clean up your Outlook.com inbox — Adinand Email Cleaner

**Clean up Outlook.com in three passes: stop the inflow, clear the backlog, then empty Deleted Items if space is why you are here.** Doing it the other way round — deleting thousands of messages first — leaves the same senders writing in, and the inbox fills up again. Every step below uses Outlook.com’s own tools.

## Pass 1 — stop the inflow

- **Unsubscribe in one place.** Outlook.com “examines incoming emails to determine if they are part of a subscription from the sender” and lists them: select Settings, then “Select Mail, then Subscriptions.” and “From the list of Your current subscriptions, find the one you don’t want to receive any longer and select Unsubscribe.” (Microsoft Support, [“How to manage email subscriptions in Outlook.com”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/how-to-manage-email-subscriptions-in-outlook-com), read 28 October 2026) More on this: [How to unsubscribe from emails in Outlook.com](https://adinandemail.com/answers/unsubscribe-from-emails-outlook).
- **Sweep a sender for good.** “Sweep gives you options to automatically delete all incoming email from a particular sender, to keep only the latest email, or to delete email older than 10 days.” Note the timing: “Sweep rules run once per day. Inbox rules run as soon as email arrives in your mailbox.” (Microsoft Support, [“Organize your inbox with Archive, Sweep, and other tools in Outlook on the web”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/organize-your-inbox-with-archive-sweep-and-other-tools-in-outlook-on-the-web), read 28 October 2026)
- **Use a rule for anything subtler.** “Every rule needs at least three things: A name, a condition, and an action.” (Microsoft Support, [“Manage email messages by using rules in Outlook”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/mail/manage-email-messages-by-using-rules-in-outlook), read 28 October 2026) Step by step: [How to auto-delete emails in Outlook.com with rules](https://adinandemail.com/answers/outlook-rules-auto-delete).

## Pass 2 — clear the backlog

For one folder at once: “Go to the folder that you would like to empty”, “Select the check box above the message list.”, then “In the reading pane, select Empty folder. All your email will be moved to the Deleted Items folder.” If Focused Inbox is on, “you will need to empty your Focused and Other inboxes separately.” (Microsoft Support, [“Delete email in Outlook.com”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/delete-email-in-outlook-com), read 28 October 2026) Sweep handles a single sender’s backlog the same way — but “The Sweep option isn’t available from the following folders: Junk Email, Drafts, Sent Items, and Deleted Items.” (Microsoft Support, [“Organize your inbox with Archive, Sweep, and other tools in Outlook on the web”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/organize-your-inbox-with-archive-sweep-and-other-tools-in-outlook-on-the-web), read 28 October 2026) To clear by age instead of by sender: [How to delete old emails in Outlook.com](https://adinandemail.com/answers/delete-old-emails-outlook).

## Pass 3 — only if storage is the problem

Deleting does not free space at once: “The Deleted Items folder does count against your mailbox storage quota until it is manually emptied or the emails are automatically deleted after 30 days, whichever happens first.” (Microsoft Support, [“Storage limits in Outlook.com”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/storage-limits-in-outlook-com), read 28 October 2026) To empty it, open Deleted Items and “Above the message list, select Empty folder.” (Microsoft Support, [“Delete email in Outlook.com”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/delete-email-in-outlook-com), read 28 October 2026) Before you do, remember you can still get mail back while it sits there — “Items removed from your Deleted Items folder are recoverable for 30 days.” (Microsoft Support, [“Recover and restore deleted items in Outlook”](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/recover-and-restore-deleted-items-in-outlook-49e81f3c-c8f4-4426-a0b9-c0fd751d48ce), read 28 October 2026) The full storage picture is in [Outlook.com storage full](https://adinandemail.com/answers/outlook-storage-full).

## Where our app fits

[Adinand Email Cleaner](https://adinandemail.com/outlook) does Pass 1 and Pass 2 from your phone: it groups your inbox by sender, unsubscribes in one tap and turns a decision into an Inbox rule in your own mailbox, named “Auto-trash:” and the address. Pass 3 stays yours: the app never empties Deleted Items. On iPhone and iPad it works with Outlook.com, Microsoft work or school accounts and Gmail; the Android app works with Gmail. Processing happens on your device, the app has no servers of its own, and it asks Microsoft for headers, never message bodies. It moves mail to Deleted Items and cannot delete anything permanently. The free tier caps how much it will clean and how many rules you can keep; the [pricing section](https://adinandemail.com/#pricing) has the current numbers.
