# Why do my Gmail emails disappear after I read them? — Adinand Email Cleaner

**When mail vanishes the moment it is opened, two settings explain most cases: an inbox type that sorts read mail into a lower section, and a second mail program that archives or deletes Gmail's copy once it has fetched the message.** Google's POP help names the second one in almost the same words as the question: "If the emails you read in your other email client are getting deleted from Gmail, check your POP settings" ([*Read Gmail messages on other email clients using POP*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7104828), read 22 October 2026). The first is quicker to check, so start there.

## Check 1: is the inbox sorting read mail out of view?
Gmail's inbox types change where a message sits once it is read. On a computer, Google's layout page says that with "Unread first," the inbox is "separated into two sections: "Unread" at the top and "Everything else" at the bottom", and that Priority Inbox can show a section called "Important and unread" ([*Change your Gmail inbox layout*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/18522), read 22 October 2026). The page does not describe the move itself, but as we read those section names, a message you open no longer belongs in "Unread" or "Important and unread" and drops to a lower section. If that section is collapsed or below the fold, the mail looks gone.

In the Android app the same type is labelled differently: "If you choose "Unread first," your inbox will be split up into two sections: "Inbox" and "Unread."" ([*Change your Gmail inbox layout (Android)*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/18522?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 22 October 2026). If you are reading from the Unread section, opened mail leaves it. Scroll down or open the other section before you assume anything has been deleted. To go back to the plain tabbed inbox, choose Default under Inbox type; the full list of types is on [changing the Gmail inbox type](https://adinandemail.com/answers/change-gmail-inbox-type).

## Check 2: is another mail program taking Gmail's copy?
If you also read Gmail in Outlook, Apple Mail or another program, look at how that program connects. With POP, Gmail's settings decide what happens to its own copy after the download. Under "When messages are accessed with POP", Google lists four options: "Keep Gmail’s copy in the Inbox", "Mark Gmail’s copy as read", "Archive Gmail’s copy" and "Delete Gmail’s copy" (the POP page above). Its fix for disappearing mail is to make sure "Archive Gmail's copy" or "Delete Gmail's copy" aren't selected. You find the setting in Gmail on a computer, under Settings, See all settings, Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

The trigger is the download, not the reading, but on a phone or laptop that checks for mail every few minutes the two happen close together. Mail archived this way is still under All Mail, which is where Google's archive page says archived messages go ([*Archive Gmail messages*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6576), read 22 October 2026). For a copy deleted this way, the POP page does not say whether it passes through Trash first. Google's missing-mail page also warns that "There’s only one copy of every email", and that a message deleted on a phone or program synced with the account "is deleted forever" ([*Gmail messages are missing*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7015314), read 22 October 2026), so a program that deletes after reading is worth fixing first.

## Things that look similar

**A swipe or a notification button.** Archiving by gesture is covered on [why Gmail archives emails on its own](https://adinandemail.com/answers/stop-gmail-archiving-emails-automatically) and [changing swipe actions](https://adinandemail.com/answers/change-swipe-actions-in-gmail).

**A filter.** Google's missing-mail page says to look for filters that "automatically archive or move incoming emails to your trash" (the *Gmail messages are missing* page above). A filter acts when mail arrives, so it hides mail before you read it, not after.

**Mail that is in All Mail.** If you find it there without the Inbox label, it was archived; [finding archived emails](https://adinandemail.com/answers/find-archived-emails-in-gmail) shows how to move it back.

If none of these fits, [emails missing from the Gmail inbox](https://adinandemail.com/answers/emails-missing-from-gmail-inbox) works through the remaining causes in order.
