# How do I get emails older than 12 months? — Adinand Email Cleaner

**Search `older_than:1y`.** Google documents the operator as "Search for emails older or newer than a time period. Use d (day), m (month), or y (year)", with `older_than:1y` as its own example (*Search operators you can use with Gmail*, read 22 September 2026). Type it in the Gmail search box on the web or the phone; there is no menu for it.

## The unit trap <p>`older_than:12m` and `older_than:1y` mean the same span, but the trap is different: people write `older_than:12` with no unit, get nothing back, and conclude their old mail has been deleted. The unit letter is required. Gmail does not delete old mail on its own — if it was delivered and you did not remove it, it is there.</p>

## Combinations that are actually useful <ul> <li>`older_than:1y has:attachment larger:10M` — old and heavy. This is usually where the storage is. `larger:` and `has:attachment` are documented on the same Google page, with `10M` as their example.</li> <li>`older_than:1y category:promotions` — a year of marketing, which almost nobody needs and which is safe to lose.</li> <li>`older_than:2y from:noreply@example.com` — everything one automated sender produced, before that sender existed in your attention.</li> <li>`older_than:1y -is:starred -in:sent` — old mail you never marked and never wrote, which is a rough definition of "arrived and was ignored".</li> </ul>

## Before you act on ten years at once <p>Read the result before you touch it. Old does not mean unimportant: tax records, tenancy agreements, warranties, the receipt for something still under guarantee, and the account-recovery mail for services you have forgotten you use all live in exactly that range. Narrowing by sender or by category first is what turns a dangerous sweep into a safe one.</p> <p>Deletion in Gmail is a two-stage thing, which helps here. ## Why this search is worth running even if you delete nothing <p>It answers a question the Settings screen cannot: what is the shape of the mail you have kept for a decade.
