# How do I delete every email in a Gmail label at once? — Adinand Email Cleaner

Deleting the label will not do it. The emails stay; only the tag goes, which is covered on [editing Gmail labels](https://adinandemail.com/answers/edit-gmail-labels). To get rid of the mail itself you search for the label, select everything the search found, and delete that.

## On a computer

In the search box, type `label:` followed by the label's name. Google's operator reference describes it as "Find emails under one of your labels", with `label:friends` as its example ([*Refine searches in Gmail*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7190), read 29 October 2026).

Tick the Select box above the list. On its own that covers "all messages on the current page" ([*Delete messages in Gmail*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7401), read 29 October 2026).

Use the link in the notice that appears above the messages. Google's example notice reads "All 50 conversations on this page are selected. Select all 2,000 conversations in Inbox.", and the instruction is "To select all conversations, click the link in the notification."

Click Delete.

Google's example is written for the Inbox; its page does not show the notice's wording after a search, so look for the link that offers to select all of them (the delete page above).

## Check two things before you click Delete
**Mail with more than one label goes everywhere at once.** Google's labels page is explicit: "When you delete an email, it’s removed from every label and your inbox" ([*Create & manage labels in Gmail*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/118708), read 29 October 2026). A receipt filed under both `Shopping` and `Tax 2025` leaves both if you clear `Shopping`. To spare it, exclude the other label: `label:shopping -label:tax-2025`, using the minus sign Google lists to "Exclude emails from your search criteria" (the operator page above).

**A label sits on messages, not on whole threads.** The operator page notes, beside `has:userlabels`, that "Labels are only added to a message, and not an entire conversation." Gmail selects and deletes conversations, so a long thread where only one message carries the label may go in full. That is our reading of how the two facts combine; Google's delete page does not discuss it. If threads matter, open the long ones before you delete.

## In the Gmail app
The app has no select-everything-that-matches link. Its delete steps offer a Select all box, and then: "By default, Gmail selects up to 50 messages to delete"; for more, "Scroll to the top of the page" and select all again ([*Delete messages in Gmail (Android)*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7401?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid) and [*(iPhone & iPad)*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7401?co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS), read 29 October 2026). The same pages say a search operator in the search bar narrows what you delete, so the `label:` search works there too, fifty at a time. For a label holding thousands, a computer is the realistic tool.

## Afterwards
The deleted mail sits in Trash, and "After 30 days: The message is permanently deleted" (the computer delete page above). The label is still in your sidebar, now empty. Keep it if a filter still files new mail into it; otherwise remove it with the label's More menu, "Remove label" (the labels page above).
