# Can I delete emails by date in Gmail? — Adinand Email Cleaner Last reviewed: September 24, 2026. HTML version: https://adinandemail.com/answers/delete-emails-by-date **Yes: search for the date range, select every conversation that matches, and delete them in one go.** Gmail's own delete instructions use a date range as their example, `after:2025/3/29 before:2025/4/5` ([*Delete messages in Gmail*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7401), read 24 September 2026). The operators are simple. The edges of the range are where people delete more, or less, than they meant to. ## The two operators, and one worth knowing about

`after:` and `before:` take a calendar date. Google's operator reference describes them as a way to "Search for emails received during a certain time period" and accepts both `after:2004/04/16` and `after:04/16/2004` ([*Refine searches in Gmail*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7190), read 24 September 2026). For "everything more than N ago" the relative form, `older_than:`, is simpler and has [its own page](https://adinandemail.com/answers/get-emails-older-than-12-months). ## Deleting a whole year

To clear, say, 2019, a range that brackets the year from both sides works:

Now the part Google leaves open. Its help page does not say whether the day you type after `after:` or `before:` is itself included, and it does not say which time zone the date is read in. Its developer guide, written for programs searching through the Gmail API, is more specific: "All dates used in the search query are interpreted as midnight on that date in the PST timezone" ([*Search and filter messages*](https://developers.google.com/workspace/gmail/api/guides/filtering), read 24 September 2026). That sentence is about the API; Google does not say the search box in Gmail behaves the same way. Either way, mail that arrived close to midnight on a boundary day may land on the side you did not expect.

Our habit, before deleting anything by date: run the search, look at the newest result at the top, then go to the last page and look at the oldest. If both dates are inside the year you meant, the range is right. It takes thirty seconds and it is the only check that uses your own mail.

## Selecting all of them, not just fifty

On a computer, ticking the Select box only takes the current page. Google's page shows the banner that appears — "All 50 conversations on this page are selected. Select all 2,000 conversations in Inbox." — and says "To select all conversations, click the link in the notification", then Delete (the *Delete messages* page above). Miss that link and you delete fifty.

The Gmail apps work in batches. On Android and on iPhone, Google says "By default, Gmail selects up to 50 messages to delete", and deleting more means repeating the select-all step ([*Delete messages in Gmail — iPhone & iPad*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7401?co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS), read 24 September 2026). For a whole year of mail, use a computer.

## Conversations and date ranges

Gmail lists conversations, and a thread that started in 2019 may hold a reply from 2022. Google's operator page explains that "Gmail identifies matching messages first" and can return an entire conversation when one message in it matches. It does not describe what happens to the later replies in a matching thread when you delete from a date search. If that matters to you, switch conversation view off first — Settings, See all settings, "Conversation View", Conversation view off ([*Group emails into conversations*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/5900), read 24 September 2026) — so each row in the results is a single message with a single date.

## After you press Delete

Nothing is gone yet. Deleted mail moves to Trash, where you can still recover it, and "After 30 days: The message is permanently deleted" (the *Delete messages* page). Until then Google counts it: items in Trash and Spam "count against your storage limit" until you clear them ([*Manage your storage in Drive, Gmail & Photos*](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6558), read 24 September 2026). If the point of deleting by year was space, empty Trash afterwards; if the point was a tidier inbox, the 30 days are a safety net worth keeping.
