# How do I clear my unread emails on iPhone? — Adinand Email Cleaner Last reviewed: September 22, 2026. The other is doing something about several thousand messages you have not read and probably never will. The first takes about fifteen seconds; the second is the real question, and marking everything read does not answer it. ## In Apple Mail, on the phone

Apple's own steps, from the iPhone User Guide page *Check your email in Mail on iPhone* (read 22 September 2026): "While viewing a message list, tap … tap Select, then select the messages you want to mark", then "Tap … at the bottom of the message list, then choose Mark as Read."

The same page carries a warning worth reading twice: "When you select a Transactions, Updates, or Promotions message, you're selecting all the messages in that category from the sender." So one tap can be quietly much larger than it looks.

## Why the badge still shows a number you do not recognise

This is the part nobody guesses. Apple documents it plainly: "The number of unread messages shown on your Home Screen reflects the number of unread messages in your Primary category. To show your total number of unread messages in all categories, go to Settings > Notifications > Mail > Customize Notifications, then turn on All Unread Messages."

So a badge of 6 over a mailbox holding 4,000 unread promotions is not a bug. It is two different counts, and until you know which one you are looking at, no amount of clearing will make the numbers agree.

## In the Gmail app on iPhone

There is no single "mark all as read" button in the iPhone app. What works is to make the pile selectable first: search `is:unread`, or narrow it to the part you actually mean — `category:promotions is:unread`, `from:someone is:unread`. Those are Google's documented operators, from the Gmail Help page *Search operators you can use with Gmail* (read 22 September 2026), and they behave the same on the phone as on the web. Then long-press the first result to enter selection mode and work down the list.

It is worth doing on a computer if you have one to hand: Gmail's web interface has a select-all checkbox that covers an entire search, and the phone does not.

## What marking as read does not do

It does not delete anything, and it does not change your storage at all. Mail you have read still occupies the same bytes of the 15 GB that Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos share between them — Google's own storage page says the quota is "shared among Drive, Gmail, and Photos" and that when it fills, "Messages sent to you go back to the sender" (read 22 September 2026). An inbox that is all-read and full is exactly as broken as one that is unread and full.
