# How do I permanently block a sender in Gmail? — Adinand Email Cleaner

**Blocking sends that sender's future mail to Spam — it does not delete what they have already sent, and it does not take you off their list.** Gmail's help states the effect directly: *"When you block a sender, even when you remove their emails from Spam, Gmail still automatically identifies their emails as spam."*

## What blocking does and does not do <ul> <li>**Does:** route future messages from that address away from your inbox, permanently, until you unblock.</li> <li>**Does not:** remove the years of mail already sitting in your account, or the storage it occupies. The sender keeps sending; you simply stop seeing it. For a legitimate mailing list that is the wrong tool — Google's guidance is to *"click Unsubscribe or Go to website"* instead.</li> </ul>

## The limit nobody mentions: blocking is per address <p>Marketing mail rarely comes from one address. A single retailer may send from `news@`, `offers@` and `noreply-12345@` across a year, and a block on one of them does nothing about the other two. This is why blocking feels like it "doesn't work" on exactly the senders people most want gone: it works perfectly, on an address that has already been replaced.</p> <p>For that pattern, the durable fixes are unsubscribing (which ends the relationship, not one address) or a rule that acts on the whole domain.</p>

## Block, filter, or unsubscribe — choosing quickly <ul> <li>**Unsubscribe** when you once signed up and the sender is real.</li> <li>**Block** when a specific human or address should never reach you again.</li> <li>**Filter to Trash** when the mail is harmless but endless — order updates, alerts, automated reports — and you want it gone without ever seeing it.</li> <li>**Report as spam** only for mail you never asked for. Reporting a real newsletter teaches the filter the wrong lesson and leaves the subscription running.</li> </ul>
